The accumulator s an important part of the compressor, and play roles in stroage, gas-liquid separation, filter, silencer, and the refrigerant buffered.

The accumulator is to separate the liquid and gas state of refrigerant which let the refrigerant in full gas state to enter the suction port of compressor with refrigerant oil so as to avoid flood shock to the compressor. At the same time, it can hold the excessive refrigerant and reduce the system noise.
